Map of High Street East depicting businesses in the first half of the 20th century. Showing location of Bridge & Doxon, Blakeman’s, Hammets, Dr Elkington’s home and surgery, Misses Heathcotes. This map is a reminiscence by Elsie Tompkinson whose grandparents had a pork butchers at 20 High street, pigsties’ at the end of Bellman’s yard, and a slaughterhouse in the yard. They lived in St Marys Cottage, where ‘The Retreat’ now stands.
