The George and Dragon Inn 8 St Mary Street.
Description:
The George and Dragon Inn 8 St Mary Street. Exterior, front. Next door the Bulls Head can be seen on the left. The plaque says 'Fireman' indicates that the fire service kept a horse there, for use in the town centre. Often called 'The George' for short. The will of Thomas Steventon (butcher / cheesemonger) of 1846 leaves the inn to his wife Martha and also notes that he purchased the inn from George Pickering. Timberframing - in evidence at the rear indicates that this building also survived the Great Fire of Newport (1665).Date: 1923
