Medieval brass weight with the Royal coat of arms.
Description:
Medieval brass weight with the Royal coat of arms. Found at Lower Bar. Size 6" x 4 1/2" Weight 7 1/4lb Found in 1883 and reported in Edward Jones' book "The Historical Records of Newport". It is likely that the weight was used in connection with the tollages charged at the Upper and Lower Bars in the past. The weight has been dated to 1406-1603, because it shows the arms of France quartered with those of England. It was used during these dates because English monarchs still claimed to be the monarchs of France.Date: 1406-1603
