Rachel and Margaret Burne photographed by Newport photographer John Brown about 1910. Rachel and Margaret Burne lived at Loynton Hall, the youngest and only girls in a family of seven. One of their brothers was Arthur Sambrook father of John Burne of London. Rachel (sitting) was born in 1898. She became a nurse in the Great War. After the war she nursed Charlotte who had had a stroke. When Charlotte died Rachel went to Canada where she married a farmer and they had a daughter Ann. Margaret, born 1891, wanted to marry Pat Cowie in 1910 but her parents did not approve so Pat went to India with the Civil Service. He became a clergyman during the Great War. In 1919 he returned to England and married Margaret and they both went to India. In 1923 they returned to England for the birth of their first baby. Pat had a tonsillectomy and died. The young widow and her daughter Jean went to Hampshire to live in a cottage. Jean is still alive but in a Care Home.
